THE KCF STORY

The Beginning

The second of October 2005 will be etched in the minds of the family of KCF forever. This was the God-moment that has propelled KCF to become what it is today. Ashok Andrews, our Pastor, and his family had just moved to their rented apartment in Kasba and were in the process of settling into a new phase in their lives. This was also a time of uncertainty because the way ahead was far from clear. The one thing that greatly encouraged them, however, was that God had given them a promise to hold on to: “Look at the nations and watch and be utterly amazed. For I am going to do something in your days that you would not believe, even if you were told.” Habakkuk. 1: 5 & Acts 13: 41. The Lord’s plans were way bigger and far more exciting than anything they had ever imagined!

HISTORY

The Birth Of A Fellowship

On that morning our Pastor and his family were in for a really big surprise. God used a very dear friend to encourage them to do the unimaginable. She insisted that Pastor’s family would meet along with her for the first official service of a nameless fellowship. This was going to be the smallest Church service that they had ever been a part of, with just 5 members, or so they thought! From that very first service the Lord had His own purposes. When they finally got to the home of the friend the Lord had brought together 9 people (4 were visitors). This was the Master’s Church and He was going to guide it in ways that only He could! Each passing week saw the Lord bring in people of His choice. Pastor’s home had to be re-arranged each Saturday with all the furniture being moved into the bedrooms to facilitate eager worshipers. As God brought more and more people each week, there was a need to cater to the children that came with the families. This need was met when a family of the fellowship opened their home in order that the children could attend Sunday school there.

The Name KCF

You are possibly wondering how we got our name. This was another of God’s own special doings. One of our young men had fallen in love with a Christian young lady from another city Church. When he visited the girl’s Pastor to talk about his marriage plans he was asked a number of very important questions. One question, however, took him by surprise! The Pastor asked him, “What is the name of the Church you attend?” This was when our nameless fellowship got the name, “Kolkata Christian Fellowship”. The young man’s reasoning was simple- We are in Kolkata, we are called to be Christ’s ambassadors and we need to be a fellowship that honors Jesus.

A Bigger Venue

It did not take us long to realize that our homes were not going to be big enough to accommodate the many that the Lord was bringing to the fellowship each week. It was also exciting to realize that we were one of the few churches that met in the Eastern part of Kolkata. God had brought us to an Important Place to accomplish His Special Purposes.

Sandhya Deep

Our search for a bigger and better place of worship led us to a marriage hall (Sandhya Deep) not far from Pastor’s home. Though this place had many limitations (like rows of pillars in the centre of the hall) we knew that the Lord had led us to this place in His time. We could use this hall just once a week (on Sundays) for about 2 hours. We were truly grateful that the facility had an adjoining room that could be used for our Sunday School. This hall could comfortably seat 80 people! It was a real joy that we could move to this new facility on our 2nd Anniversary.

What we did not envision was that we would soon be looking for a new place of meeting because the Lord added many to the fellowship each week & Sandhyadeep was no longer able to accommodate the KCF family

Kasba Industrial Estate

When we found a rented facility in the Kasba Industrial Estate we were thrilled & felt that this will be our place of meeting until the Lord provide us a permanent center for Worship. This building was ours every day of the week & we were even able to partition & set up the place in a manner that suited us.

We got really comfortable here & were discussing the possibility of conducting two services each Sunday when everything changed in a moment. On a Sunday morning, we were not permitted to meet by the local administrators. They insisted that this was not a place where Church could function. After much discussion they gave us 3 months’ time to vacate the premises & make alternate arrangements.

The 3 months went by quickly and as many a door was shut, we wondered what God had in store for His Church. It was in this state of desperation that God led us to the St Sebastian school in mysterious ways

St. Sebastian School (Our Present Meeting Place)

We have been worshipping at the current location for around 6 years now & thank God for the wonderful relationship that we enjoy with the school. We thank the Lord that He has added many to the family of KCF during this phase of our existence.

One of the most unique aspects of the KCF family is that we are a body that is represented by people from all over India & from various parts of the world. Worshipping at KCF is truly a foretaste of heaven! What is even more exciting is that many in the community around our worship place have often thanked us for bringing the whole world into their neighbourhood.

We rejoice in the fact that people from all over India & the world can worship, serve, love, pray & witness together. What a sobering thought- "By this will all men know that you are my disciples."

William Borden’s words, “No Reserve, No Retreat, No Regrets” has and continues to be a central focus in all that God is doing in the KCF family.
